Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing
With recent advances in genetic testing it is now possible to carry out a paternity test while the woman is pregnant. This is a non-invasive method of testing and carries no risk of miscarriage. Due to a small amount of fetal blood present in the mother’s bloodstream during pregnancy we can determine paternity of the child from a simple blood test. A blood sample can be collected from the mother as early as 7 weeks gestation. This is compared to the sample taken from the potential father. The test results are available within 10 working days and reported in the same fashion as legal paternity tests.
